Presenting the opening scene from Qui êtes-vous, Polly Maggoo?, the 1966 film directed by fashion photographer William Klein: Chic synopsis: A spoof of the excesses of the fashion industry, the movie is about Polly Maggoo, a 20-year-old Brooklyn-born supermodel living in Paris. Peggy is the star of the runway at the big shows and fashion editor Miss Maxwell, based on Diana Vreeland, rules the scene. The ridiculous passes for the sublime. Polly becomes the subject of an episode of a vapid TV news documentary series called “Qui êtes-vous?” and is followed by a French TV crew as well as by Prince Igor of Borodine, a small country in the Soviet bloc. We watch the documentary being shot. We await Polly’s arrival in the principality. We observe a lunch in the suburbs, and we learn about Peggy’s childhood. But… Is there more to Polly than her pretty face? Is anything below the surface? Extremely Excellent questions all.
THE SATIRICAL EXCELLENCE OF QUI ETES-VOUS PEGGY MAGGOO?
